saturday may 26 1955 the bermuda recorder page nine old timers " pace ed sherlock i a s p 0 r t s ffl rainbow tea to exciting marathon derby win at the g u 0 of o f hall ed sherlock 24-year-old private in the bermuda militia artillery who hails from south shore southampton won the 10-niilc-plus 195c bermuda marathon derby from somer set to hamilton on thursday leading a field of 14 he was cheered by thousands as he broke thc tape at the finish line in court street in one hour and some sixteen runners en tered the competition but only 14 responded to the go signal given by constable alan lister at the starting line at loyalty inn three of the starters did not finish somerset dusting off the sports somers isles league meets somerset c c tomorrow tl^rsday may 31 1936 time 3 p.m fi p.m the race got off to an excit ing start with colin benbow a teacher at warwick academy taking the lead which he held for two and a half miles when benbow passed st james church none of the other run ners were in sight however sherlock who needs about two miles or more to get warmed-up soon caught up with the dashing teacher and passed him at the foot of white hill by stabilizer special attraction — closing the big road race from somerset to hamilton last thursday created more excitement than usual among a great many people in the colony thousands are interested in this race — from old to young — and they wait for it every year this year more interest in the tough long run was created because of the reappearance of some of the former winners kenneth castle was a favourite to win the run among some of the spectators but he got winded and dropped out of the event of popularity contest what may be one of the best matches of the season will be played at somerset tomorrow when the s.c.c a team will play a team representing the somers isles cricket league the game will start at 11 a.m sharp the league has selec ted a very strong team for this annual game and some bright and interesting ericket is ex the most dangerous fast attack in bermuda ericket today both can bowl for long periods at a time the lea rue players should give the s.c.c a thorough work-out paper dress
