wednesday july 13 1960 the bermuda recorder page five first county cup match tomorrow for asportsffl cup match and picnic supplies game s at bailey's bay the first match in the second oldest cup match iu bermuda will get under way tomor row morning at the bailey's bay field when bailey's bay and cleveland county meet it will be the first match in the eastern county cup com petition which has been going on since lfxm two years after the annual cup match between somerset and st george's started come to commission tuckers house dusting off the sports simmons silta winner miss trott wins ladies cup king street by stabilizer the ninth summer tournament just finished at the bermuda tennis stadium was a very good effort bv the somers isles lta the players and the officials were pleased with it the organization was not always what it should be but on the whole it was good the ninth somers isles lta tournament at the stadium finished last sunday on what was described as a good note his excellency the governor lt general sir julian gas coigne was present and pre sented the prizes to the win ly they didn't miss very much the way miss trott and miss davis teamed up showed they will be a hard combina tion to whip they will be very sharp later on after they deserved to win they played more shots than russell and smith played and it paid off to the full somerset cricket club bailey's bay are the defend ing champions in the match tomorrow they won the cup last year after a pretty grim struggle to get to the final they met cleveland in the final and they meet them again tomorrow in the open ing match the two other teams in the competition are st david's and flatt's easton thomas can still hit a tennis ball pretty hard and run aa fast as many a younger man as winner of the men's senior tennis title thomas should be well satisfied with himself alan simmons of somerset was in very brilliant form against eldridge smith in the men's singles final miss trott also came into her own against miss shirley davis clarence corbin and alan simmons thrilled the audience with their play and skill in the doubles for men they made a good team all the way the ladies doubles was pretty sharp too but it was not as sharp as the men's next year the tournament should be better by far than it was this year regular monthly meeting ners wednesday july 13 i960 alan simmons of somerset surprised the critics and him self by winning the gents sin gles title from eldridge smith a hard fighter and a good re triever simmons has been playing good tennis this year he was tipped by many to win the tournament if smith didn't both players were on their game and the few spec tators enjoyed watching them in action smith tried hard to break simmons game and his concentration but he couldn't the ladies singles went to miss c trott who beat shirley davis the match would have been over sooner had miss davis not shown some of her best form miss trott was steadier than her opponent and that is what finally won her the title miss davis was a little more care less than usual especially with her ground strokes the men's senior singles title was won by easton tho mas who beat william mar tin it was a struggle for thomas to get over his man but he did it in a most con vincing fashion at 9.00 p.m agenda on notice board bailey's bay and cleveland are well matched in batting and bowling strength i each has a mixed attack which can wreck the other if it is allowed to get on top as far as pace is concerned the teams are also pretty even in strength in this department as well the by order of the president the talk now among cricketers is the first match in the eastern counties cup competition it will be played on the bailey's bay field it is a small ground but that taste the difference a in the match between these two teams if cleveland is beaten it will not be an easy win although both teams have been playing well this season cleveland county is one of the few teams who play wed anywhere they are a good all round group and they will be out to take the cup back with them when they go home tomorrow night after the game be sure to visit the pool room miss davis and miss trott came up with a win in the ladies double miss seymour and miss darrell fought game ly but they could not hold back the trott-davis combina tion their volleying and place have played a few more hard matches together long enough to make them in fielding no team is better than the other man for man the players are good in the field there isn't much room for spectators at the bailey's bay field but the fans will find room they always have and they will again tomorrow stands from what we can judge t»ailey's bay are th over-all favourites to meet in the final once more they are a tough team as tough as the cleveland county side so we should see a very good day of cricket but iu the final analysis it must be said that cleveland has the better slow bowlers their left arm spinners can play havoc with the opposi tion and make it hard for the bailey's bay batsmen to get going orig'mal & genuine the annual cup match between the somerset and st george's cricket clubs will soon be here it is not so far away and the somerset people are getting ready for it in a big way the progressive minded scc have gone to work and erected more permanent seating accommodation they also had the ground treated at the same time and it is now the best all the way we were informed by one of the officials of the club that the new seating will take care of at least a thousand people seated comfortably it looks mighty good and the spectators at this year's cup match will enjoy it the men's doubles went to alan siiiimoiis and clarence corbin the veteran and the youngster showed that they can do it eldridge smith and earl russell used everything they had to keep in the match but the simmons-corbin com bine wouldn't let go they played the better tennis and shots were accurate and time mackeson's both days of the milk stout annual cup match the crowd will be large and enthusiastic at the opening game and thrilling cricket is expected the match starts at 10.00 a.m sharp and the crowd will be
