bigger much noisier and with high hopes of being the next gov ernment they had a fine time proposing to do all kind of things including raising re b'rement pensions everybody is in favour of raising the state pension paid to all wo men of 60 and all men of 65 if they have retired but the labour party also explained that this would be paid for oy raising taxes on the better paid — not just the rich they are surfeited with party politics and with inter pretations explanations jus tifications accusations and predictions most of which will be wrong this does not mean that the prime minister can have an election whenever the whim takes him if it appears to the people that he is being an opportunist he will almost certainly lose so he must be circumspect but after four the opinion polls go on test ing public opinion each week and as they are not the slightest use whatever as a guide to the future i will not bother you with them any way they'll be different next week britain has just been through the high season of political conferences it began in sep tember and mercifully ended in early october before tele vision provided an irresistible platform for politicians eco nomists commentators and all the rest of the tribe of talking heads political con ffeiemoes were occasions for the faithful minority to gather together and cheer one anoth er up the newspapers took appropriate note of what was said but you could always turn over the page dorchester realty ltd there is however always likely to be a slight differ ence of opinion between those who decide how much never theless to say frankly that if elected you will increase tax ation for an awful lot of pec pie is certainly honesty in politics of dorchester house church street hamilton unbroken weeks all british children ara taught in infancy that hon esty is the best policy but in politics a certain amount of latitude was allowed there's no escape now if you want to know the football results you have to listen to all the rest because they put the results at the end this is said to be an improved meth od of communication our name is synonymous with quality and our services professional hence our dealings are con ducted in the highest manner as many of our satisfied clients will confirm - we are as sole as the building we occupy it may even be the best policy in politics because britain is a vastly experienced country with so much free comment that the people are hard to deceive it does not pay to make promises to the british electorate and then neglect to carry them out anyway because of radio and above all television it seems as though nobody in britain has been able to es cape from three unbroken weeks of non-stop political talk from 9.30 a.m to 5 p.m followed for the rest of the evening by interviews discus sions and opinions our staff are experts to all aspects of financing acting as mortgage brokers investors and advisers rentals and property management are given our undi vided attention and our accounts are supervised by professionals monthly rental cheques are mailed promptly on the first of each month it is not that politicians lie it is that they are sometimes carried away by their own eloquence it was said long ago of one of britain's politi cians who was given r to sweep ing promises of a heaven on earth he believed it oh how he believed it when he was saying it actually the whole thing can be summed up in a few sen tenced the conferences be gan as they always do with the trades union con._tre-.sv and that includes unions with ten million members they found a great deal wrong with the world which they were surg needed just those reforms or changes the con real estate sales general insurance estate develop ing and i are all part of the when the ordinary man in the street as they like to call them was striking for a liv ing wage to keep themselves body and soul together they were called irresponsible — as the government is con cerned but that does not ease the burden of the poor man , who is bothered with how *:* make ends meet in a little while you are go ing to have the b.i.u knock ing at the door on this closed shop issue — so can't you bee more trouble coming i say willie let's stop playing with fire because it burns some times and i note this similar nota tion has been applied to the civil servants * snbject to exchange control regulations : before we part willie i want to ask you this question — are the brains of the civil servants a little heavier than those of ihe government that they dare not ask or fight for a living wage willie let me teli you this is a beginning to what is to take place in the very near future ber muda is at the crossroads and she must be prepared for a mixture of trouble hope to see you next week willie goodmorning willie me for there have been rum blings for some time in the civil service now it nas burst forst in all its fury the demands may seem a little steep willie but as you and i know willie any individual or body of people must aim high if they want to get any where so say i tim experts at reading crystal balls goodmorning tim here we are again tim as usual endeavouring to do our best in helping to solve some of the vexing problems which we find ourselves confronted with last week as you know tim there was a threatening cloud hanging over our heads the threatened strike of die civil servants we hoped this cloud would not cause a heavy downpour modern may not need etiquette insurance that may be so tim bur i still say they are wrong in their demands — and i can rot see government meeting these demands they have a principle which must be foi l-wed whatever the cost how ever i am sure tim a com promise can be reached before too long . q must wedding guests really respond with gifts ■some of our bermudian peo ple are horror-stricken ovsr this strike by the backbone o the colony let's ask our selves willie why not lei's just look over a few miles of water to the great city of new york and what do you see . . . firemen and hospital workers on strike or the verge of strike for those who cannot foretell the future we offer life policies fire & wind storm houseowner's and householder's comprehensive workmen's compensation all risk and personal accident policies a formerly if you ware invited to the church only no gift was expected ... if to the reception it was today however the individual makes his own decision about send ing a gift i had hoped tim as i said to you last week that a rea sonable settlement would hive been arrived at to avert this strike but this failed and we v ere faced with a situation where those who keep our government functioning went en strike this has shook the madam and i so badly that siie had to go to bed i am thinking of the future o bermuda tim what about the future of our young peopla who we are asking to come back to bermuda to give us the benefits of their talents ii this what they would be meeting we better do a littl thinking tim and i mean on both sides you and i know what hard times are like these and many other risks are covered by the insurance companies we q what do you think of the type of persons who make a habit of urging other persons tc pay a visit without ever specifying a particular date represent we bermudians are shock c-_i by the civil servants if what is happening in new york happened here tliev v/ould die of heart failure so you willie and all your friends must be prepared for any such happenings that can now take place in bermuda you will find our rates competitive and our service efficient provident investment & holdings company ltd before she went to sk-ep she asked me willie what is our island coming to what is behind all of this unrest a while there is nothing exactly improper about this i should think a little more of their sincerity if they were a little more definite church street hamilton tel 24105 no doubt you are right in your reasoning willie as far willie it was no surprise
